  • Upper Dolpo

Upper Dolpo is a unique region known as "the last enclave of pure Tibetan culture." Its landscape and Buddhist traditions resemble pre-Chinese Tibet more than Nepal. This rugged area is home to resilient villagers living in some of the highest villages worldwide. Upper Dolpo, located in West Nepal, offers a glimpse into the culturally Tibetan way of life, with visits to Buddhist and Bönpo monasteries. Until 1996, foreigners were not permitted here, preserving the region's culture from tourist influence. A highlight is Shey Gompa, a revered monastery where pilgrims undertake a circuit around Crystal Mountain, considered a sibling to Tibet's Mount Kailash.
